Family Trees

Families are invited to celebrate a birth, marriage, civil partnership or life of a relative this year with the planting of native trees from seed in woodland or in their own garden. Plant a tree seed to celebrate a loved one and receive a care and seedling certificate.

The event is free and open to all, with the seed planting event taking place at Hoburne Bashley Woodland, Sway Road, New Milton, Hampshire, BH25 5QS on Saturday 9 November between 10am and 1pm.

Our Tree and Ranger team who will be running activities such as pencil making, mulch bombing and storytelling and the Hobourne café will be open for hot drinks and refreshments.

Trees and woodlands are a key feature of the natural beauty of the New Forest and they also make an important contribution to the appearance of towns and villages within the area. The right tree can be a fantastic feature in your garden and will attract wildlife for decades to come.

The attendees will be collecting and planting tree seeds (oak, beech, sweet chestnut, field maple, birch etc) with the view of taking two home to look after and grow on to that in the coming years they can be planted at another family trees event or planted in their garden.

Collection of local seed is more sustainable then sourcing trees from elsewhere, they will be of local prominence and some taken from the more significant mature trees from the New Forest. i.e King or Queen of the forest, Oak trees at Moyles Court (growing on open land)

The seeds will be grown in temporary newspaper pots or in ‘seed bombs’ which as well as being fun also feeds into the sustainability message. Instructions for the care of newly germinated seeds will be provided to help your tree thrive.
