Listed buildings dataset
Listed buildings are buildings or structures of special architectural or historic interest granted with legal protection. There are over 340,000 listed buildings in England, separated into three grades; Grade I, Grade II*, and Grade II.
- Grade II listed buildings are considered to have special interest and constitute about 91.7% of all listed buildings.
- Grade II* listed buildings are considered to have more than special interest and constitute 5.8% of all listed buildings.
- Grade I listed buildings are of exceptional interest and only amount to 2.5% of all listed buildings.
All these structures are included on a statutory list maintained by Historic England, the government’s adviser on the historic environment.
In the National Park, we are lucky to have over 620 listed buildings which range from palaces and country houses to many smaller but more typical cottages and hovels built of brick, timber frame or cob (clay earth reconstituted with water and binding aggregates). Listing celebrates and provides protection to these special buildings and structures that positively contribute to the cultural heritage of the National Park.
Further detail on Listed buildings within the New Forest National Park are available at Listed buildings – New Forest National Park Authority.
We have received government funding to improve our planning digital data through the MHCLG Digital Planning Improvement fund: Round 2.
Listed Building datasets were enhanced as part of the award funding, these are available from this webpage, and can be explored in the map of planning data for England: Map of planning data for England | Planning Data.
