Building Design and Conservation Officer

The New Forest National Park has a rich built heritage comprising over 600 listed buildings, 20 Conservation Areas and many varied locally important features.

The National Park is home to over 35,000 people and includes large Estates such as Beaulieu and Exbury, busy villages like Lyndhurst and Burley and rural hamlets. We place a strong emphasis on good design in the National Park, illustrated by the adoption of a Park-wide Design Guide in 2022, several Village Design Statements and the annual New Forest National Park Building Design Awards.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to work for one of only ten national park authorities in the country. We are looking for an individual who has a passion for the built environment and displays a positive approach to safeguarding the National Park’s outstanding built heritage. Alongside providing specialist building design and conservation advice to support our statutory planning function, this role provides an opportunity to work proactively with local communities, interest groups and other partners on projects to conserve the local distinctiveness of the National Park.

You will have a heritage conservation qualification and be able to demonstrate some post qualification experience in a building conservation role. Membership of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) is desirable and you will ideally have some experience in assessing development proposals and discussing solutions with applicants and agents.

Based in Lymington, we support flexible working and a blended mix of office and home working. We also offer a range of other benefits including a generous contributory Local Government pension, paid professional membership fees and plenty of training and development opportunities.

This is a career graded post and appointment within the above salary range will be dependent on qualifications and experience. The role requires a valid driving licence.
