Community engagement

Working with our communities has been crucial in tackling climate and nature recovery issues.

Through our Sustainable Communities Fund, around £1.2m has been provided to 116 projects since 2006 which have helped to reduce the carbon footprint of the New Forest National Park and improve nature.

These include:

Sustainable transport3

We’ve invested more than a million pounds to encourage more sustainable forms of transport and behaviour such as improvements to more than 80km of cycling and walking infrastructure, supporting cycle hire businesses, creating the New Forest Tour (a bus service encouraging people to leave their cars at home) and the New Forest Walking Festival.

Projects supported by the National Lottery Heritage funded Our Past Our Future programme have enhanced woodlands, streams and ponds and created new hedgerow habitats.

We have run several Green events to showcase renewable technologies, eco-buildings and green gardening – such as the Big Green Weekend.
