About Pondhead Conservation Trust

Pondhead Conservation Trust (PCT) was formed in 2014 to manage Pondhead Inclosure as a community woodland. We are run entirely by volunteers with the aim of restoring the woodland and coppice structure of Pondhead Inclosure, near Lyndhurst, to improve its biodiversity and enhance public enjoyment of this unique area of the New Forest for both current and future generations.

Volunteer opportunities with Pondhead Conservation Trust

We run both an autumn/winter programme and a spring/summer one. Tasks during our autumn/winter programme involve clearing small trees from ride (track) edges to improve the habitat for butterflies and restoring the largest area of remaining hazel coppice on the Crown Land of the New Forest.

Our spring/summer programme is concentrated on the production of charcoal from the hazel and understory timber that was cut during the autumn and winter. The production of charcoal revives a century’s old tradition and the income from selling it allows us to manage the woodland in a self sustaining way.
