About New Forest Butterfly Transect Group

The New Forest Butterfly Transect Group was established in 2011 and is now responsible for more than 50 transects across the area of Hampshire covered by the New Forest District Council (NFDC). A transect is a walk around a fixed route. Each transect is walked on a rota by a team of up to 6 walkers led by an experienced team leader, from April 1 to the end of September. The majority of our transects are on Crown Land managed by Forestry England but we also have transects on National Trust, RSPB and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust (HIWWT) land.

Volunteer opportunities with New Forest Butterfly Transect Group

Do you enjoy walking and watching wildlife? The New Forest Butterfly Transect Group is looking for volunteers to record butterfly numbers and species in and around the New Forest. You will join a team of 4-6 people to cover a transect route (around 2km) every week from April 1st to the end of September. A transect is a walk around a specific route under specified weather and time conditions. Our group is associated with Butterfly Conservation and all our data is reported to the United Kingdom Butterfly Monitoring Scheme.

If you are interested in butterflies and would like to volunteer with us or would like more information, please email us at nftg-inbox@googlegroups.com.
