About Forestry England

Forestry England is the country’s largest land manager, caring for the nation’s forests for people, nature, and the economy. The foundation of the organisation is its world-class sustainable management of the nation’s forests. Forestry England hosts more than twenty million day visits to its forests every year and local communities have a strong connection to these forests.

The New Forest is a spectacular landscape made up of a unique mix of woodlands and open habitats that are globally important for nature conservation. Forestry England manages 47% of The New Forest National Park, including much of the best-known ancient woodlands, wetlands, and heathlands which are home to many rare species of plants and wildlife.

In fact, we look after more land and more trees than any other organisation in England.

Volunteer opportunities with Forestry England

Forestry England’s volunteering programme is divided into two seasons: the Engagement Season (March – October) focuses on engaging with the visiting public and supporting events in the New Forest, and the Conservation Season (October – March) focuses on practical conservation and forest maintenance.

Engagement Volunteer Rangers (EVRs) are an extension of the Recreation Ranger Team. They engage with the public at the Bolderwood Information Unit, patrol the Forest in Forestry England vehicles, and support events such as The New Forest Show, Pony Drifts, and Deer Rutting. Significant training is provided for this role and all EVRs are expected to volunteer at least two days per month.

Two Trees Conservation Volunteers support the Conservation Season and carry out practical tasks, such as ride edge and glade clearance, using hand tools. They are led by Conservation Volunteer Rangers. This role is very flexible, no experience is required, and you can dip in/out of the season based on your diary.
