Consultation on proposed updates to local planning requirements

We’re inviting views on some proposed updates to local planning application requirements.

All local planning authorities are required by the Government to regularly review their own local validation requirements to make sure they remain up to date and in line with current national policy and guidance. Following our latest review, we’re proposing a number of changes and would welcome your feedback.

Consultation period:
20 April 2026 to midday on 15 June 2026

The proposed updates are based on the Government’s National Planning Practice Guidance and reflect our recent experience of processing planning applications. They aim to make requirements clearer for those preparing and submitting applications.

Key changes include:

  • Updated policy references
  • Clearer guidance on some plans and documents required
  • Updates to reflect current legislation

These updates cover areas including Biodiversity Net Gain, nutrient budget calculations, and advice on exterior lighting.
