Eurasian Jays

Eurasian Jays, or Jays as they are more commonly known, are woodland birds found throughout the New Forest.

They are recognisable by their pinkish-brown body, black moustache stripe and bright blue barred wing feathers, as well as their loud, harsh calls alerting other wildlife to danger.

Jays play an important role in the Forest ecosystem as they collect and bury thousands of acorns each autumn. Many of these are never recovered, allowing new oak trees to grow and helping regenerate the Forest’s ancient woodlands.

Improving woodland habitats for different bird species like Jays was an important element to the Species Survival Fund project.
