Common Scorpionflies

The Common Scorpionfly can be found in the woodlands and hedgerows of the New Forest.

It has long wings, a beak-like snout and, in males, a curled tail that resembles a scorpion’s sting although it is completely harmless.

Scorpionflies feed mainly on dead insects and other small invertebrates, helping to recycle nutrients in the ecosystem.

They are often seen resting on vegetation in shady woodland areas of the Forest during the summer.
