Innovative Sound Creatives Take Up Position As Next New Forest Artists In Residence
PUBLISHED ON: 1 OCTOBER 2024The New Forest National Park Authority in partnership with Sway-based arts and educational charity SPUD, are excited to welcome the next wave of appointed New Forest Artists In Residence. Simultaneously, previous Artist In Residence –Jasper Rouwen will be returning with his exhibition titled ‘Friends are Forever’.
The three year New Forest Artist In Residence Programme, funded by Arts Council England, aims to develop a creative partnership between the arts and the people who work, live, and visit the New Forest. The residencies seek to explore the way we think about landscapes, how different people interact with them, and the challenges that they face.

Experimental sound creatives Em Burrows and Jeremy Segal are coming to Sway, to bring a new approach to the month-long residency. The Berlin-based artists will be engaging with the New Forest community to gather a cacophony of sounds, from poetry to stories, to songs and soundscapes. The result will cumulate in an immersive installation within SPUDWorks, alongside a new concept for the Forest – Community Radio, which will be broadcast live online.
Em said: ‘Community radio represents place, diversity, inclusivity, independence, and a grass roots ethos. Among other things, it can connect people, disseminate information, champion local arts, and be a platform for underrepresented or alternative voices.’
Em and Jeremy are seeking expressions of interest from local people who would like to be involved in the project, and are holding an open-door information session at SpudWORKS on Monday 7 October from 5.30pm – 6.30pm. All are welcome.
Also this October, fresh from his New Forest Residency in May, artist Jasper Rouwen will be returning to SPUDWorks for his exhibition titled ‘Friends are Forever’. He will be presenting a series of paintings, videos and installations based on the thought-provoking, out of the ordinary moments he encountered during his time in the New Forest. In his own words he ‘explores the blurred boundaries and intersections between the domestic and wild, public and private, and mysterious and mundane.’
Jasper will be exhibiting his work from 2 – 30 October at SpudWorks, Station Road, Sway SO41 6BA. Free entry.
