Thomas
Meet New Forest Youth Board member Thomas from Totton, originally Berkshire.
Favourite thing about / place in the New Forest?
The heathland in bloom and all the beautiful woodland walks. It’s so nice walking underneath the canopy during a hot day. I particularly enjoy Pig Bush Enclosure because it has that woodland heath mix and a vast array of interesting wildlife in the summer.
What are your areas of interest and passion?
I love biodiversity and conservation – particularly around bats. I’m also interested in understanding governance and how things get done in different organisations with all the complexities involved in that. As part of that, I enjoy learning how geography and geospatial data can help us make better decisions.
What skills do you have that could benefit the Youth Board?
I love mapping and data analysis – I’m sure a map will be made at some point! I also think I can help solve problems and help new ideas take off, based on my experience working in a large organisation.
What do you want to get from being a New Forest Youth Board member? What skills and knowledge would you like to develop?
I want to improve my listening and communication skills and develop a greater understanding of how the New Forest works – from its governance to operational work, the conservation projects and its communities. It’s also been great to meet so many lovely likeminded people who care about the New Forest, the environment and its community.
