Have a green New Forest Christmas

Have a green New Forest Christmas

PUBLISHED ON: 13 DECEMBER 2022

It’s a magical time of year when we’re ready to celebrate and indulge, but our festivities needn’t cost the Earth.

Here are our top tips for enjoying an environmentally-friendly and true New Forest Christmas.

Buy local: Reduce food miles and support the New Forest landscape and economy by buying crafts, food and drink from the New Forest Marque. The Marque is the sign of true local produce and there are over 160 passionate independent producers and member businesses www.newforestmarque.co.uk.

Reduce, reuse, recycle: Check out Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Freegle, Freecycle and others for pre-loved gifts. You could get crafty and make your own or why not gift an experience instead?

Take the New Forest Climate and Nature Challenge pledge! Join hundreds of people who have already signed up to the Challenge to help the National Park become carbon neutral by 2050 www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/pledge.

It’s a wrap: Use recyclable wrapping paper rather than many which contain foil, glitter and plastic. Do the scrunch test – if it unfolds by itself it probably can’t be recycled.

Tree tips: Buy a responsibly-sourced tree (look out for the FSC or Soil Association logo) and don’t forget to recycle it after the festive season. Check out your local council website for tree recycling schemes.

Cut food waste: There are some great recipes for using up leftovers or many items can be frozen. Use your composter bin for scraps. Check out the website www.toogoodtogo.co.uk which teams up with communities and businesses to distribute surplus food.

Ditch the car: Opt for sustainable ways of getting around this Christmas and you can burn off the festive calories at the same time. Check out the free New Forest National Park app for the best walking and cycling routes.

Help protect the New Forest’s internationally-important water habitats: Don’t pour fat or other nasties down the sink.

Show you Love the Forest: Make a donation in lieu of Christmas presents to the Love the Forest scheme and help protect the New Forest for future generations www.lovetheforest.org.uk.
