Getting to know fungi
This walk will teach you how to examine and learn the basics about fungal identification, so a x10 or greater magnification hand lens (magnifier) is advised. You will also learn about their ecology and the vital role that they play in nature.
The walking distance is not very far as there is much stopping, examining and sniffing of the fungal fruiting bodies (mushrooms), but this is the longest of the fungal walk series at c. 1 mile. These walks are open to anyone who has an interest in fungi but are not foraging walks.
It starts from the car parks at Fritham then heads south towards the lane opposite the Royal Oak pub, then round in a circle through the wood and back across the heath, particularly looking for Poronia punctata, the nail fungus which grows on rotted dung! Be careful of slightly boggy areas. There are also slight ups and downs to the walk.
