The last couple of weeks have been a challenging time for the New Forest community, however there is no doubt that in a crisis we see remarkable collaboration, courage and determination. We are truly amazed by and thankful to everyone involved!
Whilst the recent fire was devastating, it affected an area of 1.6km squared. The New Forest National Park covers 566km squared, meaning the vast majority of the Forest remains unaffected.
It is no surprise that the local economy has taken a hit from the fire due to the necessary road closures, diversions and safety measures. For many local businesses, the disruption has meant a significant loss of income during what would normally be one of the busiest periods of the year. With the A31 now accessible and roads, car parks and trails across the National Park open, the Forest is back on track in time for the August Bank Holiday weekend. If you already have plans to visit the New Forest, please still come, and consider supporting a local business while you’re here. A thriving New Forest economy is an important part of a resilient New Forest community, and every small action helps. Buy a coffee from a local independent café, pick up some local produce from a farm shop, recommend a local business to a friend, or leave a positive online review – it’s free!
If you are heading out into the Forest please stay safe and vigilant as the ground remains very dry. BBQs and campfires are prohibited. Take all your litter home, don’t drop cigarettes and remember the New Forest Code.
