Bird protection partnership is flying high

Press release from Bird Aware Solent of which we are a partner

A Solent-based partnership that helps to protect coastal birds has been recognised at the National Planning Awards with a prestigious environmental award.

Bird Aware Solent was presented with the ‘Planning for the Natural Environment’ award at a ceremony, held at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London on 4 June and was commended for its ‘strong collaboration work and functional methods of awareness raising’.

The Bird Aware Partnership helps facilitate projects to protect the birds and engages with members of the public to aid understanding of their importance. The Partnership covers a stretch of 254 km of coast, including the northern shore of the Isle of Wight and the coastline extending from the New Forest to Chichester.

Bird Aware Solent was founded in 2014 and consists of four conservation groups and 15 local authorities.

Councillor Seán Woodward, Chairman of the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH), which oversees Bird Aware Solent said: ‘I’m thrilled that Bird Aware Solent has been recognised for this award. The initiative is vital as it helps to protect 125,000 birds, including curlew and brent geese, that spend the winter in the region every year. It is great when local organisations supporting local wildlife are acknowledged for their hard work and dedication.’
