Salisbury
Heritage
The ancient city of Salisbury, to the north of the New Forest National Park, offers a wealth of places to visit. The World Heritage site of Stonehenge and the 12 century Salisbury Cathedral, with its magnificent 404 foot high spire, top the ‘must see’ list.
A number of fascinating historic buildings such as The Kings House, The Wardrobe Regimental Museum, the Bishop’s Palace, Mompesson House and the Medieval Hall are situated in Cathedral Close and are open to the public.
The River Avon runs past Salisbury, and there are paths and gardens to enjoy along the water meadows. There are also many beautiful stately homes and gardens to visit in the area.
Salisbury first became important after the original settlement, Old Sarum, was abandoned. The Iron Age hill fort is now a National Heritage site.
Entertainment and Culture
There are two theatres as well as the City Hall Entertainment Centre, a swimming pool, a leisure centre with balloon flights, and a race course.
Shopping
Salisbury is a regional shopping centre and has a market, at the Charter Market, twice a week. There is a wide choice of traditional shopping centres, as well as three shopping centres.
