Photo competition entries 2009

Winners

Water is an important feature of the New Forest landscape, whether it is the unexpected coastline, the winding rivers and streams or the hundreds of ponds. This image captures Long Pond at Burley at its best with a beautiful sunrise and a perfect reflection. Tranquillity is often considered to be part of what makes the National Park special and this picture says ‘tranquillity’ to us. A serene photograph that makes you want to be there. This competition asked for an ‘iconic’ image and there is no greater icon of the National Park than the New Forest pony. We see hundreds of pictures of the New Forest in our work and many of them feature ponies, but this image stood out. It did so not just by being in black and white, using the panoramic format and including a rare snowfall, but because of the eye-catching composition and dramatic cloudscape. We loved the way the ponies are trekking across the frame through the wintry landscape. A cracking image and a deserving winner. The mobile phone category is a new one for the competition this year. Now that most mobiles have cameras capable of taking several-megapixel images there is no excuse for missing the opportunity to grab that unexpected shot. These crazy tree roots made us think of a wild hair-do! You will often see scenes like this on a walk in the New Forest but not everyone thinks to take a photograph. Sometimes a detail evokes the place more than a big view. A well-observed picture that captures the essence of the Forest. This is an iconic image of the National Park that combines several elements characteristic of the New Forest. It is a wonderful landscape for horse-riding and there are often magical misty views across the heaths and woodlands. This picture goes a step further, though, by capturing a touching human moment as well. The photograph would make a great Valentine’s Day card. Excellent timing and a lovely image.
