The New Forest is well known for its free roaming animals, precious habitats and tranquil woodland.

But it owes its unique character to its many beautiful buildings as well as its natural wonders.

This is why the New Forest National Park Authority is seeking to reward high quality new buildings that follow in this fine tradition and enhance the communities in which they are situated.

The New Forest Building Design Awards aim to recognise the best new developments in the area, with new buildings, larger developments and extensions eligible for an award.

Now in its third year, the Awards have recognised a range of developments in the National Park, including a new-build housing scheme in the centre of Lyndhurst, a traditional thatched cottage in Woodgreen and a replacement dwelling in Minstead.

More than 850 planning applications are submitted in the National Park each year – 86 per cent of which are approved - and the awards scheme is another way to highlight the importance of good design in the National Park.

Nominations can be made by anyone living in or visiting the New Forest National Park and must be for a high standard design that has been completed in the last three years.

Pat Wyeth, Chairman of the Planning Committee, said: ‘The New Forest is full of unique and attractive buildings that help make the National Park such a special place.

‘These awards support our work as the planning authority for the Park, where we place a strong emphasis on maintaining and improving the local character of the area through our policies. We work with communities to define what makes their area special so we can protect it and provide detailed guidance to people before submitting planning applications.’

People are welcome to nominate their own buildings and awards will be given in the following categories:

  • individual buildings
  • extensions
  • larger developments.

Nominations are open until 9 October 2017 and the winners will be chosen by a panel of National Park Authority members and staff.
