Less than month left to nominate volunteer heroes for UK National Parks Volunteer Awards

Published Friday 29 August 2014

The nomination deadline for the UK National Parks Volunteer Awards is looming.

Applicants have until 22 September to nominate the volunteering individual, young person, group or project they feel deserves a bit of extra recognition.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the UK's National Parks, and the annual Volunteer Awards are a way of saying 'thank you' to all those who give up so many thousands of hours of their time, effort and dedication to ensure the future of Britain's breathing spaces. The awards recognise those deemed to have gone above and beyond expectations in volunteering.

Volunteering can take on any number of forms: from school children to those who have offered decades of service, from the individual who helps mend fences to the organisation helping to reintroduce a native species.

The Volunteer Awards are open to all volunteers and projects working within the boundaries of a UK National Park. Nominees need not be volunteering specifically for a given national park authority. So, for example, a volunteer for the National Trust or RSPB might be eligible. As long as the work being done helps fulfil the purposes of the 15-member UK National Parks family.

The awards will be given in four categories:

  • Individual (over 25 years old)
  • Young person (under 25 years old)
  • Group
  • Volunteer project

Recipients of the group and project awards will receive a £1,000 bursary to help facilitate future volunteering activity. The winning individual and young person will each receive his or her choice of footwear from outdoor specialist and UK National Parks brand partner Merrell.
