Inspire others with your energy efficient home

how to apply

Property owners who are saving money and the environment are being invited to open their homes to the public to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Green Open Doors is an opportunity for home owners around the New Forest to showcase the sustainable technologies they have in their properties over the weekend of 4 and 5 October.

Fiona and Jeremy Rogers, of Efford Mill, Lymington, took part in a previous Green Open Doors event, which is organised by the New Forest National Park Authority in conjunction with New Forest Transition. They have installed a ground source heat pump, solar photovoltaic panels and additional insulation.

Fiona said: ‘Being part of Green Open Doors is great fun, and we are looking forward to taking part again this year. It’s an opportunity for members of the public to find out straight from the horse’s mouth the benefits and pitfalls of making energy saving improvements to their homes.

‘We have lived at Efford Mill, a Grade II listed building, for half a century, and in that time we have moved from central heating fired by oil and gas to a ground source heat pump system backed up by wood burners fuelled by home grown timber. We have managed to reduce our annual energy bills without compromising on the comfort of 94 year-old great granny, who shares the house with us. We plan to do more in the way of renewables, one day getting the mill wheel into operation to produce energy.’

Those interested in opening their green home to the public can find inspiration from a new series of videos profiling properties from previous Green Open Doors events. The videos include interviews with the home owners and an insight into the most effective energy saving measures. View them at

Andy Brennan, Sustainability Officer at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘We welcome applications to join this year’s event from properties old and new which are successfully using rainwater harvesting, biomass boilers, eco-lighting, insulation, ground source heat pumps or any other energy saving measures.’

If your house has been designed or adapted to be environmentally friendly you can be part of this year’s Green Open Doors by filling out a simple form at The closing date for registration is 10 August 2014.
