It is often said that the UK's National Parks represent the essence of Britain – its past, its present, and its future.

This year's UK National Parks photo competition (14 April to 28 May) is aimed at highlighting the latter of these assets and celebrating the people who will carry the spirit of Britain's breathing spaces in the years to come.

And to encourage people to get snapping, our partners at Merrell are once again offering up a prize of top-quality footwear for the best picture.

Focusing on the young and the young at heart, the theme of this year's competition is: 'Britain's Breathing Spaces: Space to Grow.' It's a theme that is an extension of our long-standing commitment to ensuring that the beauty and diversity of the National Parks' landscapes will be there to inspire future generations.

Often, when we think of the future, of those who will look after the 15 members of the National Park family in the decades and centuries ahead, we think of young people. We think of the child catching his or her first fish, perhaps. But there is, too, the grandparent who is teaching that child to fish – who is instilling in him or her a respect and love of the UK's natural beauty.

Judges of this year's competition are keen to see that represented. They want to see people actively engaging with their National Parks. Maybe it's that child learning to fish, maybe it's that grandparent who's serving as teacher. Or maybe it's the teenager participating in the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards scheme.

"The brief, befitting of the wide-open nature of the UK's National Parks, is pretty open," said National Parks UK Director Kathryn Cook. "Mostly, we want to see people having fun – celebrating the vibrancy and inspiration of National Park landscapes and communities. The most important thing to remember is that the picture must be of people within the boundaries of one of the 15 members of the National Park family.”

The winner of the Space to Grow photo competition will receive his or her choice of footwear from outdoor expert Merrell. The competition is also supported by Natural Resources Wales, and Natural England.

Entries will be accepted from 14 April to 28 May 2014, so you're encouraged to get out and get snapping as soon as possible. And photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to take part.

More information on the photo competition, including terms and conditions can be found at: (Space to Grow).

The annual photo competition is part of a series of events culminating in National Parks Week, which takes place in July/August.
