This is a response from the New Forest National Park Authority to reports of nails or tacks laid on a part of the road during the weekend's Wiggle Spring Sportive.

‘The New Forest National Park Authority is shocked to hear of further reports of nails being left on the road to disrupt this weekend’s cycling event, following similar reports last year. There can be no justification for such acts that may cause accident or injury. This is now a police matter.

‘The event was closely monitored and whilst we have heard reports that the behaviour of a minority of cyclists was unsatisfactory, the large majority behaved well and followed the New Forest Cycling Code, which encourages responsible cycling in keeping with the special qualities of the National Park. The cycling code can be found at www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/cycling-code

‘A draft cycling charter for event organisers is being prepared in collaboration with the Cycling Liaison Group which next meets on 29 April. The Liaison Group consists of more than 20 organisations including New Forest District Council, Hampshire Highway Authority, Hampshire Constabulary, forest organisations and cycling groups.’
