The New Forest Centre and National Park Authority are pleased to announce this year’s winner of the New Forest Open Art People's Prize, sponsored by ExxonMobil at the Fawley Refinery and Park Culture

It goes to Daniel Byrne with his painting ‘Just Standing’ painted in oils on canvas.

‘Just Standing’ portrays a New Forest pony standing on the edge of the Forest at Picket Post and the use of dark and shade and dappled light creates a truly atmospheric scene.

When told of winning the Peoples’ Prize, Daniel said: ‘To find out that I had not only been selected to exhibit, but also to win the People's Prize is just an amazing feeling!’

In fact Daniel had won the People’ Prize by a long way and was an honour truly deserved.

Daniel has a long career behind him as a caricaturist, portrait and equestrian artist and was at one time the political cartoonist for the Sunday People.  He has had work exhibited all over the world, is a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists and won Best Painting in 2011. ‘Just Standing’ it seems struck a chord with residents and visitors to the Forest alike.

Daniel has this to say to aspiring artists: ‘I would recommend joining a local Art Society - the input and feedback from the members is invaluable as I have found as a member of the Ringwood Art Society.'

As for the future, Daniel says: ‘I am a huge fan of National Parks and Protected Areas.  I am looking forward to exploring more of these areas, carrying on painting and depicting the scenes I love.'
