The New Forest National Park Authority is greatly concerned by reports of the activities of a minority of people who set out to disrupt this weekend’s cycling event. This is now a police matter.

We have also heard that the behaviour of a minority of the participants was undesirable.

National Park Authority officers will be attending a debrief with other organisations to see what lessons can be learnt and we will continue to work with all parties to monitor these events and draw up a New Forest charter for event organisers and a code for cyclists. A draft is available at

National Park rangers were at the Sportive and noted that the event was well organised. They interviewed a random selection of 56 participants to find out more about their contribution to the local economy.

The results were as follows:

  • 5 (9%) local people
  • 51 (91%) from further afield
  • 27 (48%) staying overnight for at least one night in a New Forest B&B or hotel
  • 10 (18%) staying with family and friends
  • 4 (7%) arrived by train
  • 8 (14%) came from London.
