Still time to apply to the Sustainable Development Fund

Published Wednesday 25 October 2006

If you have an idea on how to encourage sustainable ways of living and enjoying the New Forest, the National Park Authority wants to hear from you.

So far, the Fund has contributed to a diverse range of projects in and around the New Forest which have been aimed at conserving and enhancing the Park.

Examples of successful projects so far include; funding for Hampshire Bat Group to research rare species of bats found in the Forest; solar panels and recycled insulation for an eco-dorm at Minstead Study Centre; visits to the Forest from socially excluded groups, to encourage their appreciation of the Forest; exhibitions celebrating the history of Boldre Parish, aimed at celebrating its history and encouraging community spirit.

If you are interested in applying to the Fund, your project has to further at least one of the National Park purposes to either; conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Park or promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the Forest’s special qualities.  In addition to this your project must demonstrate environmental, community and economic benefits.

In some cases the Fund can finance up to a maximum of 75 per cent of the project costs with grants ranging from £200 to £50,000.

Claire Gingell, Sustainable Development Fund Officer said: ‘We welcome applications from individuals, businesses, organisations and community groups from the public, private and voluntary sector.

‘This fund is a unique opportunity for local people to make a real difference to where they live.’
