Ranger returns to National Park coastline

Published Monday 27 April 2009

Exploring, teaching, outreach work and fun are all part of Leanne Atkinson’s post as she returns for a second season as a Coastal Ranger on the New Forest National Park coastline.

The joint-funded post between the New Forest National Park Authority and Hampshire County Council, proved to be so successful last year that it will now run for 12 months, thanks to extra support from ExxonMobil at the Fawley Refinery.

Last year Ms Atkinson organised a number of successful events on the National Park coastline that encouraged children and adults alike to learn about this extraordinary environment in a fun and interesting way.

Already this year her work with schools has proved popular; an outreach programme is taking the coast into the classroom, exploring climate change and life on the coast.

Ms Atkinson said: ‘I’m excited to be returning for a second year as the Coastal Ranger, it’s a fantastic role that involves working with people of all ages about a subject that I am passionate about.

‘I am now working on an events programme for the summer to get as many people as possible visiting and learning about this unique coastline and how to protect it.’
