Next step for National Park’s first dedicated planning policies

Published Tuesday 24 August 2010

An independent Government Planning Inspector will look at the New Forest National Park proposed first set of Park-wide planning policies – its Core Strategy – at a public hearing next month.

Inspector Neil Pope has invited a series of individuals and organisations to discuss a number of themes including housing, tourism, landscape, built environment, nature conservation and climate change.

The role of the Inspector is to consider whether the proposed strategy meets all the legal requirements and is judged to be sound (whether it is justified, effective and consistent with national policy).

Steve Avery, Director of Strategy and Planning, said: ‘This is the next step in achieving a set of planning policies specifically for the national park. They will be used to guide decisions on planning applications. Thousands of people have already sent in their comments during the earlier part of the process. Now it’s the Inspector’s job to look at whether the strategy is consistent with national policy and whether it has complied with legislation.

‘Following the public examination, the Inspector’s report is due in November and then we hope in January to ask the National Park Authority members to adopt the Core Strategy.’

The examination hearing sessions are open to the general public and will take place from 7 September (starting at 2pm) to 9 September at the National Park Authority headquarters: South Efford House, Milford Road, Lymington SO41 0JD.

Only those people already invited by the independent Planning Inspector to take part in the hearing sessions will be able to contribute to the discussions. The schedule and speakers can be found on the New Forest National Park Authority's website on the Examination in Public page.
