A new grant scheme is being launched by the New Forest National Park to support works on historic buildings.

Within the New Forest there are a rich and diverse range of buildings from; prominent country houses to simple cottages, farmhouses, farmsteads and individual agricultural buildings.

The aim of the scheme is to help maintain the distinctive character of forest settlements and historic buildings. These can often require specialist skills and materials; this scheme is intended to help towards their costs.

There is a total of £20,000 available from the National Park to be allocated to projects by next April. A maximum grant of 30 per cent is available with the maximum sum being £2000.

To be eligible, projects have to fit within a stringent criteria; grants are for the repair of historic fabric and not general maintenance or reinstatement.

The following categories of buildings are eligible for a grant application:

  • Listed buildings
  • Prominent unlisted historic buildings
  • Distinct local buildings
  • Boundary structures and out buildings

Paula Freeland, Head of Environmental Design said: ‘This scheme is important to preserve the diverse range of buildings that typify the New Forest. It is aimed to assist those who need to carry out specialist repairs to their properties which can be expensive.’

Grant application packs are available from the New Forest National Park and need to completed with the following information:

  • Recent photographs of the building
  • Specification of works and three quotations
