New Forest National Park takes up full powers

Published Tuesday 28 March 2006

England’s newest National Park Authority opens for business this week. After a year of setting up, the New Forest National Park Authority takes up its full duties on 1 April 2006.

Lindsay Cornish, the Chief Executive, said: ‘Since March 2005, when the New Forest was designated as a National Park, we have had an extremely busy year. We have appointed members and senior staff, found interim offices, set initial policies and worked on the complex task of transferring planning powers.

‘From 1 April the National Park Authority becomes the local planning authority within the Park boundary. We will give grants for innovative projects from our Sustainable Development Fund and work with partners on conservation, recreation and information projects. And we will provide a unified voice to champion the Park at all levels.’

The National Park Authority’s interim headquarters is at South Efford House, Milford Road, Lymington, Hampshire SO41 0JD, telephone 01590 646600, fax 01590 646666, e-mail enquiries@newforestnpa.gov.uk .
