New Chief Executive for National Park

Alison Barnes has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the New Forest National Park Authority.

Alison joins the Authority from Natural England, the Government’s countryside adviser, where she is Regional Director for London. She is currently the organisational lead on Landscape, Green Infrastructure, the Olympics and Thames Gateway and is Chair of Greening the Gateway Partnership and a Commissioner for the Mayor’s London Sustainable Development Commission.

Alison lives in Church Crookham, Hampshire, and knows the New Forest well, having grown up in Wimborne.

Earlier in her career Alison worked for English Nature and advised Government on engaging with local and regional partnerships, she has also worked for Dumfries and Galloway Council and the RSPB in Scotland.

In her spare time, she enjoys sailing and walking, especially around the Solent and along the south coast. She plays the flute and recently joined Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the first ‘Hampshire Rusties’ project.

Alison Barnes said: ‘I am passionate about the New Forest.  It will be a fabulous privilege and challenge to help the National Park Authority look after the Forest so that people can continue to enjoy it now and in the future.’

Clive Chatters, Chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘I am delighted to welcome Alison as our new Chief Executive. She brings an ideal combination of professional and personal qualities to take us forward.’

Barrie Foley, Interim Chief Executive of the New Forest National Park Authority agreed and stated: ‘We have finally found someone who I believe is good for the Forest, she is very outward looking and is keen to engage with all parties.’

There will be a month-long hand-over period when Alison Barnes takes up her role in June.
