National Park proposes new conservation area-Western Escarpment

Published Monday 28 January 2008

The New Forest National Park Authority has been reviewing conservation areas in the New Forest and is now looking at proposing a designation called the Western Escarpment.

The proposed area includes the parishes of; Hale, Woodgreen, Godshill, Hyde, parts of Ellingham, Harbridge and Ibsley and Ringwood. The areas of Hatchet Green and Woodgreen are already designated conservation areas in the National Park.

The new conservation area is made up of the settlements; Hatchet Green, Hale, Woodgreen, Godshill, Stuckton, Frogham, Hyde, Hungerford, North Gorley, South Gorley, Mockbeggar, Rockford, Hangersley, Linford, and Poulner. The area also includes Hale House and its parkland and Moyles Court and its surrounding area.  The proposed conservation area is surrounded by commons, heathlands and forests to the east, Ringwood and the A31 to the south, the River Avon and its flood plain to the west and to the north, the larger communities of Downton, Redlynch and Lover.

The area covers the western boundary of the National Park from Hangersley in the south to Hatchet Green in the north; it is approximately 14 kilometres long and 2.5 kilometres wide.

By creating a new designation to the west of the National Park, the Authority will be able to better protect its historic character and appearance, and promote the highest possible design and building standards.

Paula Freeland, Head of Environmental Design, said: ‘This western area has a typical Forest landscape with many traditional Forest buildings of architectural and historic interest.  It is important that we take steps to protect and enhance the buildings and landscapes, many of which typify the characteristics of the New Forest.’

The proposals for the Western Escarpment Conservation Area will be available to view at Hyde Memorial Hall from 2pm - 8pm on Tuesday 5 February 2008 and Woodgreen Village Hall from 2pm - 8pm on Wednesday 6 February 2008.

The proposals can also be viewed at . A questionnaire will be available at each of the displays and to download from the website.

All completed questionnaires need to be sent to Environmental Design, New Forest National Park Authority, South Efford House, Milford Road, Lymington, SO41 0JD or emailed to

Deadline for comments on proposals is Friday 29 February 2008.
