National Park goes all of a ‘flutter’ with bird events

Published Monday 8 February 2010

The New Forest National Park Authority is helping to mark the first ever Hampshire Bird Festival with a celebration of ‘bird’ events this half-term.

The lives of elusive ground nesting birds such as the nightjar, curlew and Dartford warbler will feature in a free exhibition at the New Forest Centre, Lyndhurst, starting on Saturday 13 February.  Models, illustrations, photographs, sound recordings and poetry are combined to portray the lives of these mysterious birds.  The Laying Low – Ground Nesting Birds of the New Forest’ exhibition runs until 14 March and is open from 10.00am to 5.00pm daily.

As part of the exhibition, two special bird-themed ‘Discovery Days’ will be held on Tuesday 16 February and Thursday 18 February in half-term between 10.00am and 4.00pm.  Visitors will be able to make a ground nesting bird, match the bird parts and take part in a bird beak challenge.  New Forest Centre admission charges apply but the drop-in sessions are free for under-16s accompanied by an adult.

Also with a bird-related theme, a ‘Hide with a Guide’ day takes place at Milford on Thursday 18 February from 10.00am to 3.00pm.  Experts will be on hand to help people identify the birds visiting Sturt Pond over the winter; binoculars will be available. Charges apply for some activities.

Organised jointly by the National Park Authority and Hampshire County Council, ‘Hide with a Guide’ will include additional activities led by the Authority’s Coastal Ranger Leanne Atkinson, with the popular National Park Explorer mobile van in attendance.  For more information contact 02380 899108.

The 2010 Hampshire Bird Festival is a year-long celebration of the rich and varied birdlife of the county.
