Forest Force hits National Park coastline

Published Wednesday 12 March 2008

Officers from three top New Forest organisations joined forces to give the National Park coastline a spring clean on Friday 7 March.

The New Forest National Park Authority, Forestry Commission and New Forest District Council tackled litter at Calshot Beach, Ashlett Creek and Milford as part of the activities during the second annual Forest Force litter campaign.

They were also joined by the Calshot Association, who came to help with the mammoth tidy up.

A total of 54 bags were collected on Friday afternoon, some of the more unusual items collected included; 10 odd socks, a front and back car bumper, a car battery, a door, a centre board of a boat, numerous barbeques and a mattress.

Jim Mitchell, National Park Officer and organiser of the Calshot staff litter pick, said: ‘We had a fantastic turn-out on Friday and everyone worked really hard. When everyone works together you can make a big difference in a short space of time.

‘Litter picks like this one combined with people not dropping litter, using litter bins and taking their litter home with them help keep the National Park clean and tidy.’

This litter pick was part of the larger Forest Force campaign which saw over 30 organisations and hundreds of individuals take part in litter picks in and around the New Forest National Park.

Vicky Myers, Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Forestry Commission and organiser of Forest Force, said: ‘Once again Forest Force has proven to be a great success and we have been over-whelmed with the continued and increasing support from the local community.

‘I’d like to thank everyone who has given up their time to help clean up the Forest during this week-everyone’s combined efforts have ensured that the area is ‘spick and span’ and a nicer, safer place to enjoy.’
