Tourist signage
Tourism is an important part of the local economy, generating an estimated £120 million and supporting 2,500 jobs. Signs play an important part in helping visitors find places of interest and accommodation and many of these are brown and white tourist signs.
A strategic approach is taken when considering requests for new tourist signs to ensure the New Forest does not become a forest of brown signs!
The policy which determines which venues are eligible for signs, and from what distance, is agreed by the relevant highway authority. The current policies can be found by following the links at the foot of this page. Underlying the policy is the fact that tourism venues should make the most of their own publicity materials to help visitors find their way – tourism signage is intended to enable people to safely find somewhere they are looking for, not to generate passing trade.
