Two of the best places in the National Park to view bluebells are reputed to be Broomy Inclosure, north of Linwood, and Pondhead Inclosure, near Lyndhurst.
Bluebells generally occur in small numbers in the drier, well-fenced inclosures. The flowering season runs from April to June and peaks in late April / early May.
Carpets of bluebells are not particularly common in the New Forest because the plants are vulnerable to trampling by commoners’ livestock and deer. This reduces their ability to absorb enough nutrients to sustain the bulbs throughout the autumn and winter.
