In Partnership
We are working with a large number of organisations, local community groups, businesses and schools to ensure that the New Forest National Park remains a special place into the future.
Here are a few examples of the work we are involved in relating to climate change.
- Working with local businesses to help them reduce their waste production and energy consumption.
- Working with local producers, processors and crafts people on creating a strong local products market. This reduces ‘product miles’ and creates high quality food and goods for both local people and visitors.
- Providing funding for projects in the New Forest that address the challenges we face from climate change through our Sustainable Development Fund.
- Actively supporting the rapidly growing New Forest Transition movement – part of a national network of community groups aiming to find local solutions to the twin issues of climate change and peak oil.
- Supporting the substantial efforts of other Local Authorities, in particular Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council, in delivering the Local Area Agreement. This includes obligations to reduce carbon dioxide emissions across Hampshire through, for example, improving energy efficiency of homes and transport systems, and ensuring service provision can continue unaffected, despite the effects of climate change, for example, increased flooding and droughts.
We work closely with different organisations on issues such as:
- Non-native invasive plants, which are likely to become a bigger issue as climate change progresses
- Habitat restoration, in particular peatlands and heathlands that offer opportunities to absorb some atmospheric carbon dioxide and expand areas of existing habitat, giving them greater resilience to climate change
- Understanding and planning for coastal changes, for example through involvement with the North Solent Shoreline Management Plan which will form the basis of coastal management and defence decisions over the coming years.
