Priestlands sustainable school project
Total project costs £39,635
Fund grant £29,726 (75% of total)
Priestlands is a comprehensive secondary school in Lymington with a catchment that covers a large proportion of the New Forest. The school recognises the importance of sustainability and has created the position of Sustainable School Co-ordinator to drive the school towards becoming a truly ‘Sustainable School’. Through funding from the Sustainable Development Fund the Sustainable School Co-ordinator will be able to have a 40% reduction in teaching during the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 school years, allowing a variety of initiatives, actions and ideas to be taken forward in the school. An Eco Action Plan has been drawn up by the co-ordinator with input from students to include:
- facilitate the building of an Eco Classroom within the walled garden,
- install smart metering throughout the school,
- set up recycling centre at the school site,
- improve school food production by building on the current work in the walled garden,
- reduce the school’s paper consumption which is currently very high,
- encourage staff and students to walk or cycle wherever possible,
- improve energy efficiency throughout the school,
- investigate green energy procurement.
