Applying to the fund
We welcome applications from individuals, businesses, organisations and community groups from the public, private and voluntary sector.
For a project to be eligible to receive funding it must provide environmental, community and economic benefits to the New Forest National Park meeting the criteria as detailed in the checklist.
All projects that receive funding must further one of the National Park purposes which are:
- To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Park; and
- To promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the Park’s special qualities by the public.
If you have an idea for a project that you think may be eligible for funding we recommend that you contact the Sustainable Development Fund Officer who can advise whether the project meets the criteria and explain the application process.
Your application will be assessed by a Panel made up of representatives from the local area, the panel meets every two months, for large grants will need to give a short presentation to the panel.
Small Grants
A small grants fund for amounts of up to £500 operates, funding 100% of project costs; some restrictions may apply particularly if you are a commercial business. For more information on projects that have received a small grant visit our project pages.

Fund priorities
In addition to supporting projects that promote sustainable living and further National Park purposes, Defra has asked us to give priority to supporting projects that:
- Involve young people – this helps ensure that the New Forest will be valued and protected by future generations.
- Promote social inclusion – this means helping people who may have difficulties enjoying, working or living in this special area.
- Promote understanding and support of the New Forest amongst our urban neighbours.
- Demonstrate new ways or best practice in sustainable living.
