Coastal defence

The New Forest Coast contains several castles, and other archaeological clues that suggest that the coast has been heavily defended from attackers from Roman times to World War II.

Why was our coastline defended? Who was attacking us? How have the methods of defence changed though history? What clues are left today? The answers to these questions are considered in this activity pack.

The coastal defence resource looks at local invasion and defence through history, using sites and signs that are left in the landscape. It provides ideas for related activities and detailed information on some potential field trips. The Coastal Defence loan box reinforces these activities with real archaeological artefacts recovered from local beaches archaeologistsand shipwrecks.
