Mosaic BME

Final celebration

Sunday 22 April 2012

The Mosaic project in the New Forest was set up by the Campaign for National Parks in 2009 and has now reached its natural end for which funding was available.

A group of Community Champions and their friends, together with staff and Members from the National Park Authority, a Ranger from the Forestry Commission and Dave Dibden (who manages Pondhead Inclosure) spent a wonderful day together to mark the end of this phase of the work.

After gathering at Bolton’s Bench in beautiful sunshine, we walked to Pondhead Inclosure where Dave instructed us in the art of coppicing, charcoal burning and the wildlife of the Inclosure. Here we were entertained by the ladies to a display of Bollywood Dancing in which, at the end, most of us joined in!

After a sumptuous lunch (brought by the champions) at the New Forest Centre, we said a big ‘thank you’ to Clare Taylor who has been the CNP project officer in the New Forest as well as in Dartmoor and Exmoor. We left the Centre in a downpour and drove to Blackwater where we were joined by more participants from Southampton, bringing our party to over 35. The rain did not abate during our tour of the Arboretum, but did not dampen our enthusiasm. We were entertained to more dancing, this time by the children who were just as eager as their parents.

The day was a sad, but very encouraging experience. The three years have come to the end, but the Mosaic champions who have enthusiastically undergone their training are determined not to let things drop. The will become New Forest Community Champion volunteers promoting the National Park within their communities, linked both a south east England Group and a national network.

Mosaic has been a resounding success in the New Forest, as it has in other national parks. CNP, in cooperation with all 10 English national parks and Youth Hostels Association, has set up a movement that will continue to inspire ethnic minority communities to take a positive interest in the New Forest.
