The New Forest Land Advice Service is running over 30 rural skills courses this year as part of the Our Past, Our Future Landscape Partnership Scheme funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. We are delivering a training programme for farmers, commoners, landowners and managers around the New Forest. For more information about the courses please follow the links below.

Tractor Driving – Sparsholt College

Safe tractor operation in agriculture, forestry and horticulture is an essential part of a challenging area of work. This course is particularly suitable for new entrants or those who have had little formal instruction in the safe use and operation of these types of vehicles. Course features include an emphasis on safe operating techniques, highlighting the dangers associated with such equipment. This course leads to the NPTC Certificate of Competence in Tractor Operations for successful candidates.

Transporting livestock on short journeys – Sparsholt College

This is a two day course and will result in a City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award (subject to passing the exam).

If you are involved in the transportation of animals by road on short journeys (over 65km and up to 8 hours duration) this qualification will ensure you meet the requirement for a Certificate of Competence outlined in the Council Regulation (EC) No1/2005 on the Protection of Animals During Transport and the Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 2006.

Woodland Management – Brockenhurst Village Hall

Course content: woodland types, woodland ecology and habitat enhancement, management systesm and building resilient woodlands, regulations (TPO, Felling licence, Bird Breeding season), pests and diseases and timber products.

Felling and processing small trees (CS31) – Sparsholt College

The City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Felling and Processing Trees (up to 380mm) is the updated version of the now superseded CS31 certificate. This course also includes site and tree risk assessment and directional felling and processing of small trees, prerequisites are an award in chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting. Applicants also need to be over 17 years of age.
