Tail marking
Ponies are rounded up once a year to check their health in what is known as a 'drift'. Here they are checked by an Agister, responsible for monitoring the stock and collecting marking fees. After they have been checked, the long hairs of the pony's tail are cut in a unique fashion to that Agister's part of the Forest.
