Development Plan
Development plan coverage of the New Forest National Park is currently complex because of the number of different planning authorities previously covering the area, and the incremental introduction of a new national system of plan making. For the time being it is simplest for most purposes to describe separately the development plan coverage for each of three parts of the National Park.
Before the New Forest National Park Authority became the ‘all-purpose’ planning authority for the area it was covered by five different planning authorities (two counties and three districts), and eight different plans. The National Park Authority is now the sole planning authority at a local level.
The situation is further complicated by the national change to a new system of development plans which is being brought into force over a period of time. This transition sees the introduction of new style plans while some of the old style ones are still in place, and parts of old style ones being deleted, while other parts continue in force. (Click on the ‘Saved Policies’ link next to relevant plans below for further details.)
The new planning system also includes regional plans (called ‘regional spatial strategies’) and the New Forest National Park is treated as falling wholly within the South-East for the purposes of regional planning.
