Conservation
More than half of the National Park is designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Covering over 31,000 hectares and 17 sites. There are 15 conservation areas wholly within the Park, three partly within it, covering more than 1,100 hectares. Around 14,500 hectares is Open Forest, heathland, mire and grassland.

The National Park has approximately 42 kilometres or 26 miles of coastline including saltmarsh, lagoons and mudflats.
The Solent Protection Society, formed in 1956, exists to safeguard the amenities of the Solent area and to preserve their beauty for now and future generations.
