The New Forest Commoning Review was set up by the New Forest National Park Authority in its first year of operation to consider all aspects of commoning and to make recommendations to the Authority on how best it can help secure the long-term future of commoning.  The review started in autumn 2006 and made its final recommendations to the National Park Authority in September 2007.

The Review was overseen by a steering group chaired by the Official Verderer and comprising a number of practising commoners who worked closely with the commoning community to ensure the widest possible involvement of all commoners in the Review.

The final report makes 28 recommendations on how the Authority and appropriate Forest organisations can help secure the long-term future of commoning.

Over the next few months the Authority will consult a range of organisations as to how they might contribute to an action plan to secure the long-term future of this unique element of the Forest’s cultural heritage.
