Using the latest hi-tech gadgets we look right into the tree-top nests of the New Forest's wild birds of prey and watch their every move - from eggs hatching to food arriving and chicks leaving.

You can also learn about the reptiles and amphibians of the New Forest.

Staff and volunteers are on hand to answer all your questions about Forest life, and you can find out how you can do your bit to help wildlife in the New Forest, and at home.

Exhibition: All Trees are Clocks by Professor Adrian Newton of Bournemouth University.

A multimedia exhibition of art and science profiling the results of recent research into the ecology of the New Forest and the potential impacts of climate change.

All trees are clocks

All Trees are Clocks: a live multi-media performance

A unique opportunity to see a live performance of 'All trees are clocks', a multi-media piece specifically composed to accompany the exhibition displayed in the New Forest Gallery until 9 July.

The concert will be given by Emily Burridge (cello) and Karen Wimhurst (clarinet), who will accompany a presentation of sound and video documenting how the New Forest woodlands change throughout the year.

Dendrology: Writers in the Observatory

Cost: Free, this does not include entrance to the museum

Forest Forge Theatre will be working with two established professional playwrights, Deborah Gearing and Paul Hewitt, who will be resident in the Observatory at Buckler’s Hard.

During the New Forest Arts Festival the playwrights will draw from their surroundings for their inspiration, with a specific focus on the location of Buckler’s Hard with its river and Forest landscape heritage.

It aims to connect the writers to the nature surrounding them.

There will be opportunities to speak to the writers and take part in activities relating to the Forest, trees and the landscape.

Exbury Gardens Exhibition

Furzey Gardens Beneath the Trees

Join Furzey Gardens for a variety of activities during the New Forest Arts Festival.

The Gallery at Furzey Gardens is hosting an Inclusive photographic exhibition, showcasing work from the local Learning Disability Network, alongside photographs from Paul Robertson, a local photographer.  

A programme of 'artists in residence' during the week will showcase different styles and media, and there will be drumming and drama performance art by the students of Minstead Trust.

Programme of activities:

  • Southampton Brass Ensemble & Strait Banana: Sunday 11 June, 2 - 4pm on the main lawn
  • Woodturning demonstrations with Hamshire Woodturning Association and students from Minstead Trust: between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Monday 12, Thursday 15, Monday 19 and Thursday 22 June in the Bug Barn
  • 'Tree Story' guided walk through the gardens: Tuesday 13 June, 1 - 2.30pm, join our Head Gardener Pete White for the 'Tree Story' Trail through the gardens. A guided walk featuring the story of some of the more remarkable trees at Furzey Gardens

  • 'Pandora's Box' performances from Minstead Trust drama students: Wednesday 14 and 21 June, 10.45am - 12.30pm, see 'Pandora's Box', the Minstead Trust Drama students, perform three short plays on the main lawn; 'The Pear Tree and the Farmer', 'The Boy and the Apple Tree' and 'The Ugly Tree' 
  • Poetry Reading: Thursday 15 June and Wednesday 21 June, 2 - 4pm, listen to a tree themed poetry reading with Fiona Mobbs in the Bug Barn. Suitable for all ages
  • Adinkra Painting and Junk Modelling with African Activities: Friday 16 June, 10am - 12.30pm, in the Bug Barn. Adinkra is a printed or stamped traditional cloth made by the Ashanti people in Ghana. Adinkra (ah-DEENK-rah) symbols have been used in Ghana on clothes, walls, pottery and as logos since the early 1800’s. The symbols each have a special meaning, some over 100 years old.  Let African Activities share with you these symbols, talk about their meaning and you can then make your own cloth using our stamps or by making your own.  Junk Modelling Bring along an old milk bottle and turn it into an elephant, a bird, a mask or something even more extraordinary

  • Dance Workshop with African Activities: 2 - 4pm on the main lawn. See the skills of dancers from Minstead Trust and have the chance to join in this interactive African Dance workshop yourself. Large, powerful balletic movements combine for a fun dance which is also a bit of a workout!

  • Drumming Performance from Students at Minstead Trust: Tuesday 20 June, 2.30 - 3.30pm on the main lawn

  • Morris Dancing: Friday 23 June, 2.30 until 3.30pm.

Around the gardens visitors will be able to follow a trail with stories of some of our trees in the garden.
