Christopher Tower Reference Library Open Day

Explore our collection of New Forest maps at the Christopher Tower Reference Library Open Day.


Run in conjunction with our exhibition 'Maps: The New forest Unfolded', this open day will showcase highlights from our wonderful collection of maps as well as other supporting material from our collections.

The Library, which is situated on the second floor of the New Forest Centre, contains one of the largest collections of books, maps, photographs, reports and ephemera on the Forest, available to the public in a single location. The Christopher Tower Reference Library was opened in 2004 following the building’s renovation funded by the Heritage Lottery and the Christopher Tower Foundation. Christopher Tower, who was educated at Eton Christ Church, Oxford, was the author of nine poetry books and travelled extensively in the Middle East. He spent his later years in Athens and the New Forest.

Lymington Boat Jumble

The 6th annual Lymington Boat Jumble in aid of 9th Lymington Sea Scout group is to be held on Saturday 3rd March 2018.


Are you looking to buy or sell... Boats and dinghie, kayaks and canoes, sups and surf boards, sailing gear for children and adults, buoyancy aids and lifejackets, wetsuits and rash vests, boots and dry bags, aterproofs and any other yacht/boat jumble you have lying around? (Including spare fenders, cleats, bits of rope).

Forest School Taster Day – Testwood Lakes

This course is a fully immersive experience that will give you a clear understanding of what Forest School is all about and whether certified Forest School training is right for you.


A half day introduction to the Forest School approach. You will be introduced to the ethos and benefits of Forest School as well as getting hands on experience with typical activities.

This course is a fully immersive experience that will give you a clear understanding of what Forest School is all about and whether certified Forest School training is right for you. We will look at the approach to risk management that is an integral part of the process, for both leaders and children. Our Forest School Experience aims to inspire you to follow your interests and consider how the approach could relate to your setting.

Is this course for me? This course is ideal for pre-school leaders, teachers or any individual interested in finding out more about Forest School, especially if considering doing certified training. If you are interested in specific skills or about how to better utilise your grounds for outdoor learning please get in touch with us.

Please arrive 10 minutes before the course is due to start Testwood Lakes, Totton near Southampton. Meet at the Testwood Lakes Education Centre, free parking is available on site. Bring appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather on the day, sturdy, comfortable footwear (walking boots or wellies). Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided.

Tutor Grace Brennan – Education Officer Testwood Lakes. Grace is a Forest School Leader of five years, and environmental educator of 13 years, working with groups of a range of ages, backgrounds and abilities. She is a full time Education Officer based at Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve, which is managed by the Hampshire IOW Wildlife Trust. Booking is essential, you can book through our website.

Digital wildlife photography basics 1

Learn to create beautiful wildlife photographs.


Bring your own camera, whether it is a digital SLR, bridge or compact camera and learn how to use the functions and settings you will need to improve your photography.

Your tutor John Combes is an experienced wildlife photographer and lecturer will teach you about the equipment and techniques used by nature photographers from the basics up including:

  • Exposure
  • Focal Length
  • Camera Settings
  • The technology and techniques used in nature photography.

After the indoor session you will get a chance to practise what you have learned by taking photographs round our Blashford Lakes reserve near Ringwood and take part in an informal and constructive review of the images in an indoor session at the end of the day.
