Woodland management

Woodland management

New Forest woodlands are unique, with an outstanding diversity of habitat and the highest population of veteran trees in Western Europe.

Recent changes in woodland ownership, combined with a decline in available timber markets and falling timber prices, has led to 40 per cent of privately owned woodlands being unmanaged.

Lack of management is concerning as it:

  • Reduces habitat quality
  • Causes the number of species to decline
  • Increases pests and disease outbreaks
  • Encourages the spread of invasive non-natives plants.

Our Working Woodlands project is looking to improve this situation, aiming to bring 120 hectares of woodland back into management.
