Applying to the fund
What is sustainable development?
The commonly accepted definition of sustainable development is 'development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.
In reality, this means living in a way which has a positive effect on environmental, economic and community well-being, ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come.
Is my project eligible for funding?
To be eligible for the Sustainable Development Fund your project must demonstrate that it will promote or support sustainable living in the New Forest and further at least one of the National Park purposes:
- To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Park; and
- To promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the Park’s special qualities by the public.
Your project must provide environmental, community and economic benefits to the New Forest National Park
The sustainability
checklist (32 KB) provides a simple list of questions to help gauge whether your project does this.
Fund priorities
In addition to supporting projects that promote sustainable living and further National Park purposes, Defra has asked us to give priority to supporting projects that:
- Involve young people – this helps ensure that the New Forest will be valued and protected by future generations.
- Promote social inclusion – this means helping people who may have difficulties enjoying, working or living in this special area.
- Promote understanding and support of the New Forest amongst our urban neighbours.
- Demonstrate new ways or best practice in sustainable living.
Who can apply?
We welcome applications from individuals, businesses, organisations and community groups from the public, private and voluntary sector.
What types of work can be funded?
This could include:
- practical work – labour costs, equipment and materials
- feasibility studies or research projects
- education and training
- awareness-raising or promotion
or you may have something else in mind!
How will my project be assessed for funding?
Your application will be assessed by a Panel made up of representatives from the local area. Panel members have a wide range of interests including community, business, environment, wildlife, agriculture, tourism and recreation.
How much can I apply for?
If you require funding of up to £500 you can apply for a Sustainable Development Fund small grant.
If you require funding of over £500 then you should apply to the main Sustainable Development Fund.
The Fund can finance up to 75% of your project costs although some restrictions may apply, particularly if you are a commercial business. Due to limited funds available the maximum size of grant awarded is likely to be around £20,000.
You can include volunteer time as part of your contribution to costs. This is valued at set rates which are available from the Sustainable Development Fund Officer.
If your application is successful you will be asked to sign a legal agreement with the New Forest National Park Authority setting out what is required for satisfactory completion of your project and claiming your grant.
How do I apply?
We strongly encourage you to get in touch with the Sustainable Development Fund Officer to discuss your project and for help and advice in completing your application, prior to you submitting your form.
